In San Luis Obispo County, we use Simtable as a powerful interactive wildfire simulation tool to enhance firefighter training, community education, and emergency planning.
Simtable projects live, data-driven wildfire simulations onto a 3D sand table, combining topography, wind, weather, and fuel data to create realistic fire scenarios. Fire Officers use it to practice incident command, tactical decision-making, and strategy development in a dynamic environment that mirrors local terrain and conditions. This hands-on approach helps prepare new and experienced officers to manage real-world wildfires safely and effectively.
Simtable is also an essential part of our community outreach programs. During Fire Safe Council events and public workshops, residents can see firsthand how fire behaves in their own neighborhoods—how it moves with the wind, reacts to fuel breaks, and impacts evacuation routes. These visual demonstrations help homeowners understand defensible space, structure hardening, and the importance of early evacuation.
