At the Orange County Fire Authorities headquarters and training facility, two structures were set up for the demonstration. The first structure, meticulously designed with a 5-foot-wide hardscape surrounding it, showcased the importance of absolute clearance. The area between the building and the desert-friendly landscaping was void of any flammable materials, with enclosed eaves and a rod-iron fence providing additional protection.
In contrast, the second structure represented a home where adequate precautions were not taken. Bushes and bark chips surrounded the structure, with an attached wooden fence and exposed eaves making it vulnerable to the impending fire.
As firefighters ignited the bark chips surrounding both structures and simulated 10 mph winds with large area fans, the difference became strikingly clear.
